Why build a data map?

A data map is the foundation of nearly every privacy compliance program. GDPR Article 30 requires controllers and processors to maintain records of processing activities, and US state laws such as the CCPA/CPRA expect businesses to know what personal information they collect, where it is stored, and who it is shared with. Without an accurate picture of your data flows, it is impossible to respond to data subject requests, assess cross-border transfer risk, or scope a DPIA correctly.

This free builder illustrates the core elements of a data flow record: the category of data, its ingestion point, the storage provider and region, and the security controls applied in transit and at rest. For deeper guidance, see our data mapping methodology guide, the GDPR ROPA template, or try the ROPA builder and DPIA assessment tool.
